THE Penang state government will show its support for Earth Hour by switching off the lights of Komtar, City Hall and Town Hall and hopes the public would do the same at home.

State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law also urged schools, shopping malls, factories and other organisations to switch off their lights for an hour on March 27.

“This is our initiative to save the planet and to make Penang more environmentally-friendly.

“Around the world, lights are turned off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm and candles and lamps are lit instead.

“We will be observing the event at Esplanade from 7.30pm to 9.30pm by lighting 10,000 candles and lamps,” he said, adding that the Australian Futurize Global Community Foundation would be distributing the candles and lamps at the venue.

The programme includes a sing-along session and is open to the public.

Every last Saturday of March, cities around the world celebrate Earth Hour — an international cause against climate change.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 to raise awareness on climate change, to create a sustainable future.

Law was speaking during a press conference recently.
