THE first basic right of a consumer is the right to basic needs and one such fundamental need is the right to housing. Thus the proposal to make it more difficult for first-time house owners to purchase their first home is disconcerting. Bank Negara’s proposal to raise the deposit from 10% to 20% for housing loans makes access to this basic right even more difficult.

We support the more stringent measures taken to thwart speculators who seek to make access profit within the housing industry thereby creating a bubble and affect the economy negatively. However, we cannot condone the move by the Central Bank to deny those who want a roof over their heads.

WHILE the National House Buyers Association (HBA) applauds the move by the government to encourage home ownership for first time house buyers earning less than RM3,000 a month under the My First Home Scheme (MFHS), it warned that once the euphoria of a purchase has passed, there are some hard realities to face.

Chief among them, it said, is the issue of servicing monthly loan instalments.

Last week's security breach at Citibank was just the latest in a string of incidents that have rattled consumers: Sony, Lockheed Martin, and iTunes are also among recent high-profile targets. With such big names falling victim to hackers, is it still safe to bank online?

The answer, according to top security experts, is a qualified "yes." Using the Internet to bank, buy music, or shop is still as safe or safer than visiting brick-and-mortar locations, as long as consumers take precautions and know what to do if they notice any suspicious activity. In fact, the overall trend is a reassuring one: 2010 actually saw fewer records breached than the previous year due to new infrastructure in place, says Julie Conroy McNelley, senior fraud and risk analyst at research firm Aite Group. Today, she adds, "banks have some of the most sophisticated mechanisms in place."

LAST week, I had to go to KL Sentral to attend to some personal matters.

I decided to park my car at the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) and take the train to my destination which seemed to be the fastest and most convenient way to travel during the after-work peak period.

I saw a barrier displaying the Touch n’ Go 'Park and Ride' tag used together with the normal cash payment mode. As I was about to enter, however, I saw no ticket dispenser which meant the facility is limited to the prepaid e-payment card users.
